THIS WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN AUGUST 2012.
After bidding good-bye to high school and 4 months of a soul refreshing vacation it was finally the week before the start of college. Like the ten thousands of students in our state and 90% of my classmates i was going to pursue engineering, at the premier most university of our state. Having enjoyed an era of leisure i was in no mood to shop, pack and leave. I'd be missing half of the second and the whole of the final season of my most favourite series Make it or Break it.Not to mention The Big Bang Theory, New girl, Master Chef and almost every other show on then. Being a hygiene freak, the prospect of living at the campus hostel was dreadful though they were to be better than normal standards for NRIs like me. Being an introvert does nothing to help, of course, at new places. The only thing on my side was that i'd studied in 8 different schools throughout my life in 5 different cities and 8 different places that were our homes so i'd not miss our own home in Trichy or my friends(having been used to it). I didn't know what to expect and learned to shut my mind from thinking of it.
The day dawned; no different from any other day. I'd packed 3 suitcases full of stuff and wondered what my roommate would think of each and everything i had. We'd met on the day of the admission(31.7.12) and decided to be roommates for no apparent reason(absolutely no regrets there).I remember criticizing our accommodations together. Getting back to track I woke up that day with mixed feelings of sadness, excitement and other such ironic emotional combinations. I looked forward to the samosas we'd buy without fail on the Adyar Ananda Bhavan on NH45. After lukewarm good byes we were finally on our way.
I was slightly intimidated by my room mate after looking into her facebook profile page. I knew she'd be the talk of the college the first few days as being one of the prettiest "Sight adichifiable" fresher girls and didnt know how it would be to carry the tag of "her roommate". We cant be compared. Our contrasts were striking.
After a 5 hour road journey we reached the gates of my very modest looking "campus".It was 1/5th the average size of other college campuses and the only appreciable aspect of its construction was the dense population of old trees. Dried leaves fell everywhere and even otherwise it did not seemed to be under any regular maintenance. I tried to ignore all of this and vowed that my own room would be cool and well arranged.
We entered the hostel compound where every building was generally named after a river. I met my room mate and we were one of the first ones to arrive. I noticed one girl alone in her room with all her stuff. It was a new beginning and mustering inspiration to throw away my introvert nature we said 'Hi's' and extremely nice and sweet introductions were made with all the girls who now arrived with lots of smiles hiding lots of anxiety. One corridor on the second floor of the senior's hostel had been allotted to be the NRI wing. All of us were either NRIs or had been( like me). There was an immediate need to stick to each other in this dirty, strange campus. And anyways the rest of the first year girls were in a separate building all together. The next two days were for orientation and we awaited the start of classes and new friendships.
